The Idea is Not To Live Forever. But To Create Something That Will.

Andy Warhol

Sustainability isn’t a box we tick. It’s the foundation of everything we build.

Our very first SpaceMan building was constructed from over 80% recycled or upcycled materials — a figure that still impresses us today.

Through careful design and obsessive reuse, the entire project was completed without a single trip to landfill. Not one. From start to finish, every resource found a purpose.

We believe the most sustainable material is the one that already exists. Reusing, remastering and re-imagining high-quality components will always be a far stronger ecological proposition than discarding something perfectly good simply to replace it with something new. That philosophy guides every design decision we make.

At the heart of every SpaceMan building is a recycled Conex shipping container. These steel structures have already endured decades at sea, braving some of the harshest environments on the planet. Repurposed as architecture, they become an almost indestructible backbone — engineered to last a century or more. Few building materials can match that combination of strength, longevity and environmental sense.

recycleReused, Not Replaced

Over 80% recycled and upcycled materials, with zero waste to landfill wherever possible — because the greenest resource is the one that already exists.

Recycled steel shipping containers form an ultra-durable backbone, engineered for extreme conditions and repurposed into architecture designed to endure for generations.

socketLow Energy, High Performance

SIP construction, high-performance insulation and efficient glazing dramatically reduce heating and cooling demand, cutting energy use in every season.

What goes on inside

Inside, we insist on real, natural wood flooring — never plasticised substitutes or engineered imitations. We source pine, oak, reclaimed gymnasium floors and even old brewery boards, restoring them for a second life. Every reused floorboard saves a tree, and the character it brings to your space is something no factory-fresh material could ever replicate.

Our buildings are insulated using SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels), delivering energy performance almost two-thirds more efficient than 2006 IECC standards. SIP construction produces virtually zero waste to landfill — a remarkable contrast to traditional timber framing — and forms an exceptionally airtight, thermally robust envelope.

Combined with high-performance insulation and super-efficient aluminium-framed double glazing, SpaceMan buildings are naturally easy to keep warm in winter and cool in summer. The result is dramatically reduced energy demand, lower fossil fuel usage, and a building that works in harmony with its environment year after year.

We also offer solar panels, and where permitted, wood-burning stoves — alongside a near-limitless range of sustainable options tailored to your site and ambitions.

We’re proud of SpaceMan’s sustainability credentials, but we’re never finished improving. If you have ideas, innovations or emerging eco-technologies you’d like to explore, we’ll gladly work with you to make them part of your build.

Just ask.
